Under the hood
The AI comes to the photo
Most AI photo tools upload your picture to a server with a GPU, run a model there, and send a result back. EraseObject does the opposite: it sends the model to your browser once, and every photo you edit is processed on your own device.
What happens when you press Erase
- Decode. Your file is read into memory in this tab. Phone photos are turned upright using their orientation tag; HEIC is decoded by a decoder that runs on the device.
- Refine the selection. Small holes in your selection are filled, stray specks removed, and the edge grown by a margin scaled to the object — a mask that stops exactly at an edge leaves an outline behind.
- Split into objects. Separate marks are processed one at a time, so each is rebuilt from its own surroundings.
- Cut a window. For each object, a square of the photo around it — two to three times its size — is resampled to the model's 512 × 512 input. The rest of the photo is never handed to the model.
- Optional structure guidance. With Structure Repair on, straight edges entering the hole are continued through it first.
- Inference. The model runs in a background worker, on your GPU through WebGPU where available or on the CPU through WebAssembly.
- Composite. The model's answer is resampled back into the photo, inside the refined selection only. Every pixel outside it is copied through exactly. On large areas, matching film grain is added so the repair is not plastic-smooth; Best quality also restores native-resolution texture.
- History. Only the changed rectangle is stored — before and after — so undo is instant and twenty steps of history do not mean twenty copies of your photo.
What is downloaded, exactly
Each file is fetched once from this site, checked against its published size and SHA-256 fingerprint, and stored in your browser's cache. A file that arrives incomplete or altered is refused and never stored. Requests contain a file name and nothing else.

Smart Select is fast after the first click
Promptable segmentation models have an expensive part — an image encoder that turns the whole photo into a compact description — and a cheap part that answers “which object is at this point?”. EraseObject runs the expensive part once when you first use Smart Select on a photo and keeps its output in memory. Every click after that runs only the cheap part. If you erase something and click again, the description is recomputed so it matches what is now on screen.
Not every tool is AI
Text finding, wire tracing, spot finding, shadow suggestions and Structure Repair are classical computer-vision methods: fast, deterministic and with nothing to download. Blemish repair and the “Copy nearby texture” option use a patch-search texture engine that copies real detail from around the hole instead of inventing it. Text on a flat colour or gradient is removed by a flat-fill solver that fits the surface exactly; cast shadows are relit by Shadow Lift rather than repainted; and the transparent eraser simply writes transparency into the pixels you choose. The repair tools added since are classical too: the scratch, flyaway and wire finders look for thin ridges in brightness; the Ink tool models the paper and rebuilds it under handwriting; caption bands are refilled from the bar's own colour; Clone and Heal copy from a source you choose; the magic wand grows a selection by colour; and Straighten rotates the photo. If the AI engine is unavailable — an old browser, a very low-memory device, or you declined the download — Brush, Lasso, Rectangle, Text, Wire and Blemish still work, and erasing uses the texture engine instead.
Offline
The site registers a service worker that keeps its own pages and scripts available offline once visited. The models are kept by the browser's Cache Storage. With both in place you can open, erase and export with no connection at all.
What we can see
Nothing about your photos. There is no upload endpoint, the AI runs in your browser, and errors are never reported with image data. See the privacy page for exactly what is and is not collected.
